The Australian Human Rights Commission is calling on communities, organisations and people from all walks of life throughout the country, to put their hand up or nominate someone they know for the Australian Human Rights Awards 2015.
Due to the intense level of interest in the awards and to ensure that no one misses out, the Australian Human Rights Commission has decided to extend the deadline by another two weeks to Friday 25 September.
“I know so many of you are quiet achievers in this area, and reluctant to put yourselves forward – but the outstanding work you are doing to make Australia a more peaceful and equitable place to live deserves to be recognised by everyone. And while some nominees are well known, most are just ordinary people making a difference to human rights,” said Professor Gillian Triggs, President of the Australian Human Rights Commission.
The Australian Human Rights Awards were established in 1987 to honour the achievements of individuals and organisations in promoting and protecting human rights in Australia.
This year there are a total of seven human rights awards:
- The Human Rights Medal
- The Young People’s Human Rights Medal
- The Law Award
- The Business Award
- The ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ Award
- The Tony Fitzgerald Memorial Community Award.
- The Media Award
“Human rights deserve to be recognised, celebrated, respected and most importantly upheld. Please help us celebrate ordinary Australians and distinguished community leaders who have contributed to improving human rights in Australia,” said Professor Triggs.
