Human Rights Awards Tickets on Sale

Date:
Tuesday 20 October 2015

Tickets are now on sale for the 28th annual Human Rights Awards.

The event will feature an address by President Gillian Triggs on ‘The Future of Human Rights in Australia’.

The Awards celebrate the extraordinary achievements of individuals, organisations and businesses contributing to human rights.

“This is an opportunity to recognise and applaud people who make a difference to their communities.

“The nominees tend to be ordinary people who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around them because they want Australia to be a better and fairer place,” said Professor Triggs.

Winners across seven Awards categories will be announced at the Awards lunch, including the prestigious Human Rights Medal.

Past winners include Eddie Mabo, the Rt Hon. Malcom Fraser, Ron Merkel QC, Ian Thorpe, Sister Clare Condon, Dorothy Hoddinott and Elizabeth Evatt.

This year we have introduced a new category, the ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ Award which recognises an organisation for its work on anti-racism.

“The ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ campaign is a key part of the Commission’s work.

“At a time when terrorism provides a threat to Australia’s social cohesion, it is important that we recognise organisations promoting tolerance and mutual respect” said Professor Triggs.

In 2015, an all-time record number of 329 nominations were received for the Human Rights Awards.

“In recent years we have broken previous records for Award nominations and for attendance at the Awards, suggesting that the human rights community is alive and well,” said Professor Triggs.

Finalists will be announced in early November.

The Human Rights Awards will be held 12-3 pm on Thursday December 10 at the Westin Hotel in Sydney.
