Records broken for today's Human Rights Awards

The 2015 Human Rights Awards, being held in Sydney today, have broken records with 329 nominations and over 500 people attending the ceremony.

Now in their 28th year, the Awards celebrate the extraordinary achievements of individuals, organisations and businesses contributing to human rights in Australia.

Commission President, Professor Gillian Triggs, will be giving the key note speech - The future of human rights in Australia - at 12:30pm.

“The significant increase in the Awards reflects Australians’ growing interest in equality for all,” said Professor Triggs.

The Awards coincide with international Human Rights Day.

Winners across seven Awards categories will be announced at the Awards lunch.

• Human Rights Medal
• Young Person’s Medal
• Law Award
• Business Award
• ‘Racism It Stops With Me” Award
• Tony Fitzgerald Memorial Community Award
• Media Award

The most prestigious award, the Human Rights Medal, will be announced at around 3pm. The finalists are Maha Krayem Abdo, Rodney Croome, Professor Pat Dudgeon, Adam Goodes and Peter Greste.
